Welcome to the DPL...

Welcome to the Damsel Preservation League or "DPL" for short. Contained herein, you'll find a multitude of damsels of all ages worthy of preservation, as well as many links to current artists & writers of the DID genre, and many old-school favourites. Although this is basically a research type blog, there may be some occasional "mature" themed comics so, beware of this. Also this blog & is moderated to keep the spam to a minimum. The majority of the images are ones I've personally "rebuilt" from either my own collection or scans found elsewhere on the 'net. Any applicable copyrights belong to the owners and I make no money from them. Also note that this blog is still a work in progress and will be added to as I continue along...

Old Before Her Time

In Mary Marvel #10, Mary takes it upon herself to uncover the truth behind "Dr. Whizzo's" youth serum. She's none to subtle in her ways either. No real peril for Mary but she does thwart an attempted suicide! I had to do extensive work on the original scans and, unfortunately, had to crop out the headers at the top of the pages.

Bonnie O'Toole

Here's another damsel from Fantastic Comics #23 (Fox Feature Syndicate, November 1941)...Bonnie O'Toole". Bonnie is your basic "Girl Friday" to one John Braddock, Private Eye. Let's see how she fares in this fast six-pager...and hopefully John will strike when the iron is hot  (bad pun fully intended...)

Jane Drake In Peril

Normally I'd start with the first story I'd find in introducing a character but, I decided on this one for the opener. Meet Jane Drake, Detective. To the best of my knowledge, Jane appeared in the pages of Crash Comics starting in May of 1940. The story featured here is from Crash Comics #2 (Holyoke Publishing, June 1940.)

Although she's titled as a detective, Nancy Drew fans will note the similarities in her age (never revealed though I'm guessing 15 or 16, as Nancy was in her early stories...) and snooping ways. Unlike Nancy, Jane goes looking for trouble...she was way more head-strong. Her father, Shelton Drake, is a prominent D.A. (which is what Nancy's father was early in his career.) The big difference here is that Jane can't help but get involved in her father's criminal cases, especially when she disobeys him (which she does in just...about...every...story.) Jane usually forced her next door neighbour and friend, Jerry King, into her crime-fighting schemes. Both are usually captured or kidnapped in these four and five-pagers, so the action is quick and brief. I only have a handful of these stories and am looking for more but, I will be posting them all as I rebuild my poor scans.

The story here is all from microfiche but still readable. In it, Jane and Jerry are kidnapped, strong-armed and blindfolded into a waiting car. After Jane is forced to write a ransom note to her father, Jerry is taken back to deliver the message but, he manages to escape and Jane is soon rescued.

Bette In Bondage

Another Bette (note the spelling here...) This Bette is the girl friend of Yank Wilson (who is an operative for the U.S. government, out to demolish saboteurs) The story is from Fantastic Comics #23 (Fox Feature Syndicate, November 1941 and which, alas, I found out to be the final issue...) Like most six-pagers, the action is fast and brief.

Betty In Bondage

I just bet some of you were thinking "Bettie Page" now, weren't you? Or maybe even "Betty Cooper"? Heh...no, this Betty is the daughter of the Chief who issues "Z-2's" orders. "Z-2" was an early "secret agent" type series. This tale comes from the pages of Crash Comics #2 (Holyoke, June 1940.) These are upgraded scans I did and a bit smaller than the ones I posted to c3c a few years back. It's a quick five-pager...

Los Banditos Stupido Pt.2

Here's the bondage-laden second part from RRGF #20. Note that Gloria gets trussed up TWICE. Also note that she makes a bajillion-to-one shot with that rock into the car! Also note, all the escape plotting is done by her (...hmmm...) Unfortunately, there is no lead-up to either the tree tying or them being taken into the old abandoned house.

Los Banditos Stupido Pt.1

Here's the first half of a ten-pager from Richie Rich And His Best Friend Gloria #20 (Harvey, August 1981.) It's the opening story in the book and takes a while to play up to the actual danger at hand. In this first part, Richie is showing off his many gadgets in yet another attempt to impress Gloria. But he forgets "RULE #1"...always be aware of crooks wandering round on the vast Rich Estate.

It also doesn't help that he flaunts his money. I scanned in the full ten pages mainly because I wanted to do the full "lead up" to Richie and Gloria's capture (okay...kidnapping...), so there is the element of GID involved, as is usually the case. Note here that GID is not really my cuppa but, it can't be avoided in most of these RR stories. Meh. The new title is my own choosing and aptly fits with the "Dumb & Dumber" type of crooks featured here. Read on. Part 2 on the morrow, heh, heh.

For those that've been looking for more "Gloria in bondage", you'll probably enjoy the second part, so stay tuned...

It's My Party...

Here's the second story from Mary Marvel #9. Even a super heroine gets to have a birthday party! This story also reveals that Mary has no clew as to her real birth date. This story also introduces "Uncle Blacky", who bears a striking resemblance to Uncle Marvel. Read on...
