Welcome to the DPL...

Welcome to the Damsel Preservation League or "DPL" for short. Contained herein, you'll find a multitude of damsels of all ages worthy of preservation, as well as many links to current artists & writers of the DID genre, and many old-school favourites. Although this is basically a research type blog, there may be some occasional "mature" themed comics so, beware of this. Also this blog & is moderated to keep the spam to a minimum. The majority of the images are ones I've personally "rebuilt" from either my own collection or scans found elsewhere on the 'net. Any applicable copyrights belong to the owners and I make no money from them. Also note that this blog is still a work in progress and will be added to as I continue along...

The Devil Did It

Here's a "guest star" feature from Fighting Yank #22 (Standard Comics 1948?) From time to time you could find other characters from the same publisher introduced into other books, sometimes well before they got their own series. Here we have Miss Masque (a.k.a. Diana Adams) and despite how the splash page looks, it's a "gotcha". One thing to point out on page #9...either that chair is bullet-proof or Diana is a very poor shot! I've included the misleading Schomburg "gotcha" cover as well ;)

Mary the Messenger

In WOW #11 (March, 1943), Mary Batson wants to see how folks in the real world live (as compared to her relative comfort...) So, she quickly gets a job as a messenger, delivering telgrams...you know, those little yellow slips of paper that existed decades before "instagrams"? Along the way she meets a lot of interesting folks & even helps an Indian chief regain his confidence.

At any rate, it's a good thing her butler, Jives, decides to play "Sherlock Holmes" and follow Mary to find out where she's been off to...unfortunately, Mary is captured during one of her deliveries and it's left up to Jives to rescue her...or not...

Using the ol' "playin' possum" routine catches the crook left to watch Mary, off guard, heh, heh...he obviously didn't study "Damsel Escapology 101"...

Please note that this is the final "Mary Marvel Monday" post for 2013. But there are more stories of Mary's adventures to come in 2014. See you all then & have a great new year!

Hotel Hideaway

From WOW Comics #10 (February, 1943), comes Mary Marvel's 2nd appearance in this series (she would not get her own book until after WWII...) In this tale, Mary Batson runs afoul of a gang of crooks who are using the the old building she just acquired, as a hideout/training facility for criminals. This is the full 13-pager plus detail panels & an updated cover. Pages 10 & 11 are from a different source but have also been upgraded ;)

Here's the cover...

...and here's the other detail panel...

Hen-pecked Pt.2

When last we left Mary, she was bound & gagged to a beautician's chair in a salon...ingeniously hooked up to a time-bomb! If you recall the other three girls (who are still bound & gagged in the back room), they also will perish unless Mary can get loose. Let's see how she does that...

The ending here left me suspecting that the Hen didn't die but, she never again appeared in any of the Mary Marvel stories (to the best of my knowledge...) As a bonus (and because I'm fond of any girl in a western-style outfit), I've included the cover...

Don't Drink the Water

Lura ends up in plenty of trouble in Jungle Jo #1 (Hero Books~May 1950) After passing out from drinking poisoned water, she's left as a snack for a hungry leopard! Later she's at the mercy of the mad doctor as he prepares to switch her brain! It's all good jungle fun & horror so, read on, if you dare! I've included my restored version of the cover along with the full 10 pages of the story ;) If you want to read the entire book, you can go HERE. Just press the "PREVIEW" button to advance the pages...
