Welcome to the DPL...

Welcome to the Damsel Preservation League or "DPL" for short. Contained herein, you'll find a multitude of damsels of all ages worthy of preservation, as well as many links to current artists & writers of the DID genre, and many old-school favourites. Although this is basically a research type blog, there may be some occasional "mature" themed comics so, beware of this. Also this blog & is moderated to keep the spam to a minimum. The majority of the images are ones I've personally "rebuilt" from either my own collection or scans found elsewhere on the 'net. Any applicable copyrights belong to the owners and I make no money from them. Also note that this blog is still a work in progress and will be added to as I continue along...

Dot's Disguises 1

Call this what you want but, this story smacks of heavily of a "gender-bender" undertone. Scanned this in from an old copy of Little Dot in Dotland #55 (Harvey~November, 1972) Not sure if this is a reprint of the story but, giving Dot Polka a gun of any kind always led to something. Usually something dangerous.

ND Lilac Inn

The Nancy Drew book "The Mystery At Lilac Inn" was first published in 1930 (Grosset&Dunlap Inc.) I have two different copies of this book. The older copy features just the fronts-piece illustration by Russell Tandy and was the first time anyone saw Nancy bound and gagged in an illustration. This is the forth book in the Nancy Drew series.

Though the illustrations are different (a later edition features 5 illos including a two-pager) the dramatic climax is the same. Nancy, close on the heels of the crooks, hides out in a shed near the river (she actually hides inside a packing crate.) The usual storm is brewing and she is found soon enough by one of the bad guys. In this case it's "Bud" who viciously strong-arms Nancy while cramming a hanky deep into her mouth! The hanky is rammed in so deep that it causes Nancy to choke and suffocate into passing out. Unfortunately, there is no illustration for this scene.

When Nancy awakens she's on a couch sans gag. She hears the crooks arguing and makes a break for it, only to be quickly caught. This time it's "Tom" who does the strong-arming while Bud gets a length of thick rope. He cruelly ties Nancy's hands behind her back, the ropes cutting into her flesh! The ring-leader, Mary, at first wants to leave Nancy to starve to death but then remembers another hiding place far away and gets designs on ransoming her to Carson Drew. Mary orders her gagged and Nancy pleads to deaf ears. Bud warns Tom not to shove the gag in too deep, lest Nancy pass out again. Nancy is then dragged to a boat in the rain and without her shoes on! By this time her ankles are also bound but it's not alluded to.

On the stormy river, the crooks' boat is hit by a yacht and begins to sink. Nancy is tossed across the cabin and ends up on the deck. Bud wants to untie Nancy but Mary infers "Who's to know?" Meaning the obvious. The crooks abandon ship leaving Nancy to her fate.

But luck is with Nancy (sort of) as the boat drifts toward the dock. By now her gag has worked loose and she screams for help. The sinking boat is boarded and Nancy's asked why she just can't walk out. "I'm bound!" is her reply. As soon as she's untied, she goes after Mary and after tripping her up sits on her until the authorities can take over.

Below are the newer illustrations including Nancy and Helen's canoe-swamping peril, the fire scene, Nancy disguising herself and an new version of the "gag" scene.

Freckle's Dilemma

In Marvel Family #32 (Fawcett~February, 1949), Mary's "cousin", Freckles Dudley, is taken by force to be used as an "insurance policy" to prevent Mary from interfering with their crooked schemes. Freckles spends just about the whole 7-pager trussed to a chair. The baddies soon rue the fact that they should've gagged her as well. This is also another time Mary disguises herself as a boy.

Bonus detail panels, natch!

Witch's Tales Gotcha

Below is another "gotcha" cover that I have an older and really bad scan of. This is from Witch's Tales #6 (Witch's Tale Inc.~November, 1951) The set-up is among one of my favourite damsel perils (being walled up) but, unfortunately, the scene appears nowhere in the book. The cover-scan here is an all-new "HD" version, as is the rest of the book, and can be read in its entirety on the DCM, if you know where to look for it...

French Perils Pt.3

And now for some interior pages! I have no clews about the books these came from, sorry. And the "distress" here (or "undress") would strongly hint of spanking...

Perilous Sweets

Above is a detail panel I made from the page below, and which is the only page in my vast collection, where Dot Polka actually gets spanked! Even though she was threatened with a beating on many an occasion, this is one of the (very) few times her daddy carried out that threat. The one-pager is to the point & a bit ironic, given what she's getting spanked with. I guess you could say Dot got her "just desserts" in the end. Or in this case, on her end! Now-a-days, child discipline is frowned upon where swatting the kid's rear is considered a crime (in some states)...but I'll not go into the "politically correct" aspects of that here.

Remember Hostess fruit pies? I sure do. And I'm still waiting to find them in any store, now that most of the sugar and chemical-laden sweets are back in production. The Harvey comics featured a plethora of ads for any and everything Hostess (usually the fruit pies, cup-cakes and Twinkies.) A few of the ads involved some sort of Damsel in distress, or, as in the ad below, a forest faerie encased in a block of ice!

The Evil Bottles

Here's the third and best story from Mary Marvel #20. I didn't save the best for last (kinda); I just posted them in chronological order. This is also a six-pager. There is a four (4) panel hand-gag sequence as well as a suffocation peril for our heroine! Mary also gets bitten! And shrunk! And...and...oh, just read the story already, heh...

New detail panels at the bottom...

Bonus detail panels. You're welcome :)
